A Partner in Your District’s Success
Every Iowa school district has an Area Education Agency (AEA) serving its region. AEAs provide specialized expertise, resources and support that help school districts strengthen teaching and learning, support students and educators, and address local needs.
For school boards, understanding the services available through your AEA can help you recognize an important resource available to your district.
From special education and student supports to professional learning, technology, school improvement and strategic planning, Iowa’s AEAs work alongside school districts to help them meet the needs of their students and communities.

A Resource for School Boards
While AEAs work directly with district staff and educators on many services, school boards have an important role in understanding the resources available to their district.
Your AEA can be a valuable resource when your district is:
- Identifying opportunities to improve student outcomes
- Developing or reviewing strategic goals
- Addressing specialized student needs
- Supporting teachers, administrators and other staff
- Exploring professional learning opportunities
- Considering new instructional or technology approaches
- Working through a school improvement challenge

Strategic Planning Assistance
School districts seeking assistance with strategic planning are encouraged to contact their local Area Education Agency (AEA). Iowa's AEAs offer a variety of leadership, school improvement, facilitation, and strategic planning services designed to help districts establish goals, engage stakeholders, and create long-term organizational plans.
