IASB’s annual Day on the Hill is your day to lobby at the Capitol in Des Moines. It gives you an opportunity to meet with your local legislators to discuss legislative issues impacting public education, network with education leaders from across the state and learn new advocacy strategies.

Take a look at photos from last year's Day on the Hill!

Key Features

Hear from the Governor
Governor Reynolds will speak about her administration's top education priorities.

Learn Parental Advocacy Tips and Techniques
We’ve partnered with Parents for Great Iowa Schools again this year, inviting members of their group to attend. Additionally, founders of the group will be leading a breakout session focused on how you can get parents in your community to advocate on behalf of your district. More details coming soon!

Focus on the State Penny Sales Tax and Other Key Issues
This is the year of SAVE—we’re focusing on the state penny sales tax during the training portion of the morning. You’ll learn how to tell your legislators why it’s important to extend it and how your district is using it, and you’ll get some leave-behinds when you head up to the Capitol. We’re asking you to give your legislator a squishy piggy stress ball to remind them that SAVE is #WorthEveryPenny! Plus, we’ll have the #WorthEveryPenny photo frame for you to pose with your legislators so you can share on social media. We'll also go in-depth on other issues you can move forward, like funding equity, supplemental state aid and vouchers.

Who Should Attend?

Day on the Hill is right for:

  • Novice school board advocates—you’ll get plenty of support on what and how to be effective on the major issues facing your district.
  • Experienced school board advocates—help us train the rookies by sharing your insights and experiences.
  • Parents or citizens—invite a community leader to grow your network of advocates.
  • District leaders—take home tips you can use to create a custom visit involving people from your district.

Why You Should Attend

  • Getting results: last year’s attendees advocated for and helped pass school equity legislation.
  • Learn the new legislators on both house and senate education committees.
  • Gain insights from key legislative power brokers on issues impacting public schools.
  • Learn how to turn active parents into active advocates for your district.

Early registration is $140 for members. After Jan. 25, the fee increases to $170.
