Spring 2010 Workshops:
IASB's Responsible Decision-Making  and the Iowa Core Curriculum

It is critical that school boards understand their role in the implementation of the Iowa Core Curriculum. To that end, IASB held regional workshops throughout the state in Spring 2010. We are making the following items available to all members, as a helpful resource.

Please contact Mary Jane Vens, board development director, with questions.

Resources:

PowerPoint to Fuel Board Discussion: As Iowa school districts submit plans for incorporating the Iowa Core Curriculum into district work, board members may be wondering: "What can a board do about this? How might our board support this plan? What might we expect to see as a result?"  This short PowerPoint addresses these roles, poses key questions and may provide a good stimulus for discussion at your board table.

Cost Impact of Professional Development: What is one thing we know about the Iowa Core Curriculum that is true for every district? We know that for the Core Curriculum to become a reality, it will require changes in instruction. And we know that change in instruction requires meaningful staff development. We also know staff development requires time and money and that both are in short supply in Iowa school districts.  IASB education finance director Jackie Black has prepared this document, which provides cost outlines for three different options for staff development and allows schools to fill in the blanks. The document also provides some "pro and con" statements for each option. This type of information can help a board make a reasoned decision regarding cost effective and workable staff development choices.
