Employee Background Investigation Service

Employment background checks have become a vital component in today’s hiring process. Knowing the facts of an applicant or employee’s background is the best guide to his or her future performance. To meet background investigation needs for Iowa's education employees, IASB has partnered with One Source, a Midwest leader in the investigation field, to create the Employee Background Investigation Service. The service provides school districts with the ability to check multiple background-information sources. Most importantly, it assists you in making confident employment decisions.

Note: Iowa law requires all teachers who are new to your district who have taught elsewhere and do not have an initial or exchange license to have a background check prior to entering into an initial contract. To comply with this law, school districts, area education agencies and community colleges must conduct background checks for employees who get an Iowa Code Sec. 279.13 (teaching) contract, through the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) in the Department of Public Safety.  For all other school employees, the school corporation can continue to use a private vendor. There is no prohibition against also using a private vendor for a comprehensive background check on these newly hired teachers, in addition to the mandated DCI requirement.  The following is a link to the Iowa Department of Public Safety's Division of Criminal Investigation: http://www.dps.state.ia.us/DCI/index.shtml .

Additional Information:

One Source is a member of the National Association of Professional Background Screeners. One Source indemnifies Iowa school corporations, in the aggregate, for up to and including a total amount of $3 million for liability due to a founded claim against a school corporation.
