IASB Leadership Academy

The IASB Leadership Academy is a training program to provide school board members with the skills and knowledge they need to be effective state-level advocates and leaders for equity and excellence in student achievement.  The program is currently being revamped to make it more accessible.  Check back later this spring to get more details.  The goals of the program are listed below.

Goals of the IASB Leadership Academy:

  • Create a strong cadre of statewide leaders capable of advocating for equity and excellence in public education.
  • Challenge, develop and support school board leaders from around the state.
  • Create a network of school board leaders that serve as a peer-level resource for information and assistance in state-level advocacy efforts.
  • Increase personal involvement of school board members in state and local activities that enhance the role of school board leadership for student achievement.
  • Increase knowledge and influence policy on educational issues at the state and national level.

Benefits of Attending

  • Learn about the art and skills of leadership. These skills can carry over into your local board work, your professional work and personal life.
  • Clarify your own leadership goals. You’ll look at the landscape of Iowa public education and reflect on where and how you want to make a difference. You’ll identify clear, compelling leadership goals and strategies for accomplishing them.
  • Create a powerful advocacy network to help you accomplish your leadership goals. You’ll build a strong network with other emerging school board leaders and meet successful, influential Iowans already active in state-level leadership positions. These connections can last long after the academy training ends to help you advocate effectively and build coalitions to accomplish your leadership goals.
  • Improve your skills in articulating what’s important. Practice in identifying key messages and talking about issues will build your confidence in influencing and persuading people around student achievement issues.

Most sessions are held at the IASB Office at 6000 Grand Ave.; Des Moines, although some "virtual" sessions may be held in 2010.
